Profile for Talking Without Speaking

I've always had a passion for helping people communicate who can't easily communicate for themselves. Part of that is advocating, but an even bigger part is taking time to figure out just exactly how they communicate, and how you can help them express what they're thinking, feeling, or want to say. This requires really slowing down and intently listening. Not necessarily listening in the way that you might be thinking. Not just with your ears, but with your eyes as well. Sometimes when someone says nothing, whether it's because they have the ability to speak or not, it says volumes more than words can.

That's what this journal is, and what I want it to be about. I want to be able to, in some way, shape, or form, help those who can't freely express themselves do it a little bit easier. The only way I could think to do that, unless I'm standing right there in the room with you, was to devote an entire journal to it. That way, if or when you meet someone who communicates differently than most of us are used to, you may be able to look back on my work, and get some ideas of starting points or maybe even implement some of the things I've talked about in some of the posts you've read.

The biggest piece of advice I can give you is this: slow down and be patient! There's nothing instant in true gratification!

  • What is faith? (added on 05-22-2015 @ 02:00 PM) AUTHOR'S NOTE: This is something I stumbled across in my saved documents. It was originally intended for another blog that didn't pan out the way I hoped it would so I did away…
  • Butterflies dragonflies and so much more! (added on 05-07-2015 @ 07:45 PM) Summer has arrived and with it has come some signature things: warmer temperatures, sunshine, rain, (with the occasional thunderstorm) trees budding, flowers blooming, and gentle breezes. There's something and someone else that I think of…

  • There can be revelations in grief (added on 11-30-2013 @ 03:05 PM) Last night, November 26th, 2013, I discovered something about myself. This discovery didn't happen by accident, but rather thanks to the gentle listening ear of a very very good friend. Before I tell you what…
  • Millions of angels (added on 03-06-2013 @ 12:07 PM) I think by now all of us are at least familiar with the concept of a flash mob. You know, where one person starts dancing spontaneously to a song and then hundreds or maybe even…
  • One of a kind design!! (added on 11-30-2012 @ 08:30 PM) Any of you who know Cullen and I know that even though there's no engagement or wedding ring on the third finger of my left hand doesn't mean we aren't married by heart! As…
  • Energy, not body (added on 11-21-2012 @ 06:11 PM) For the last couple of days I've been thinking about something that I wanted to put on paper: when someone passes away, it's only the vessel in which their spirit was housed that is gone,…
  • My two greatest rewards (added on 09-19-2012 @ 03:45 PM) I've been wanting to share this with the world for some time now, but the craziness of everyday life just hasn't afforded me the opportunity to do so. It's something that I'm very passionate…
  • I AM a Hamilton! (added on 04-12-2012 @ 02:00 PM) Last time I wrote here I was expressing my thoughts, feelings and frustrations about how the grieving process doesn't and shouldn't have a time limit. I also briefly talked about how I have NO…
  • The show must go on! (added on 02-25-2012 @ 09:05 PM) How many of us have seen a play, even if it was only in high school? I'm pretty sure the answer is most of us, but have we ever thought about what goes into…
